Tunesmith Addendum - 6/14/91 This file covers changes made to Tunesmith since the manual was written. In addition to this file, this disk contains a few other .DOC files that cover aspects of Tunesmith not discussed in the manual. SCALES.DOC contains a listing of all of Tunesmith's 38 default scales, in the key of C. Finally, COPY_KCS.DOC describes a new feature that was added at the last minute, which allows you to "import" KCS sequences into Tunesmith. * No more copy protection * The Tunesmith disk is not copy protected. Please disregard any mention of copy protection and Key disks in the manual. Make a backup of this master disk and keep it in a safe place. Work with your backups. Yes, this should come as great news. All we ask in return is that you not make copies for others. Illegally copying software is against the law and recipient would be guilty of receiving stolen property. But there is an even greater issue here than jail time: stealing is not right! * Changes and Corrections for version 1.09 * Changes made to maintain compatability with version 1.7 of the KCS. Double right mouse click no longer goes to KCS play screen, due to change in MPE. Conflicts between disk drives caused system lock-up; now fixed. * Changes and Corrections for version 1.08 * * A bug was fixed which prevented recording after memory was cleared in the KCS. Previously, if sequence space was used up while recording from Tunesmith in the MPE, and the sequences were subsequently cleared from within the KCS, Tunesmith would not recognize the new storage space. * Changes and Corrections for version 1.07 * * A bug was fixed in which the use of folders whose names contain periods (for example, TUNSMITH.WRK) would cause errors. * A bug was fixed which caused the system to crash if a theme was generated with either an Onbeat or Offbeat Scale Weight of 8. * The number of disk drives available was changed from 6 to 12. * It is no longer necessary to remove memory resident programs or accessories before booting Tunesmith, or any other Dr. T's programs released since the first of this year! * Changes and Corrections for version 1.05 * * The tempo controls have been changed somewhat from the description in the manual. The maximum permissible tempo is now 400 BPM. Clicking on the tempo icons while holding down the [Shift] key will double or halve the tempo. Most importantly, tempos are now stored as part of the Accompaniment presets, and a new Preset Control switch has been added to the SET OPTIONS page. If the Tempo switch on the SET OPTIONS page is highlighted, then the tempo will be controlled from the preset; if this switch is off, selecting a new preset will not affect the tempo. * Another switch that has been added to the SET OPTIONS page is the Reset button. When this switch is selected, the counters used by the Divide routine and the Cyclic drum algorithms are reset each time the theme loops. If Reset is off, the counters will "free run". To illustrate the difference, create a two measure theme (Theme Length = 16, Microbeat = 6), then set up a voice with Rhythm algorithm = 10 and Divide = 3. Listen to this with Reset on and off, and the effect of this switch will be apparent. * If you run Tunesmith "full bore" - that is, at 400 BPM, with most or all voices playing, and with the Arranger running - the program might be so busy playing music that it won't have time to do some of the more mundane tasks like checking the keyboard and mouse, or updating the screen. In this case, you might not be able to stop the program by clicking on Stop or pressing the [Backspace] key. If this happens, press both [Shift] keys together, and the program will stop playing immediately. * In some of the musical examples for the Rhythm algorithms in Chapter 6, the output rhythm is not what you'd expect it to be. This is due to the fuzziness of the distinction between a long, staccato note, and a short note followed by a rest. The problem was compounded by the amount of processing that took place between the creation of the themes and printing by the Copyist, along with my own lack of attention when transcribing the music. The "rests" in the original themes do not show correctly in the musical transcriptions, but the output rhythms given are correct. * Hints 'n' Tips: If you'd like a dynamic Left display with no measure, set Steps per Measure to 999. This ensures that your Theme length will always (or almost always) be less than a full measure, and the left half of the Left display will remain constant at 0, while the right half counts down the microbeats. * The status of the Drive switch on the Set Options page is now saved with each file, but it is only loaded with DEFAULT.TUN. * Changing the default screen colors: The screen colors are saved with each .TUN file, but they are only loaded when DEFAULT.TUN is loaded at boot-up. Therefore, to save your favorite colors as defaults, first load DEFAULT.TUN, then change the colors, then save DEFAULT.TUN again. * If you copy the TUNSMITH.INF file to a hard disk, you MUST also copy TUNSMITH.PRG to the same directory on the hard drive. Contrary to what the manual says, the MPE always looks to the drive that the .INF file is on for the program, NOT the A: drive. * If you are using Tunesmith as a stand-alone program, DEFAULT.TUN must be saved in the root directory of whatever drive TUNSMITH.PRG is on. For example, if Tunesmith is in D:\MUSIC\TUNSMITH.PRG, then the default file must be in D:\DEFAULT.TUN. However, if you are using Tunesmith in the MPE, DEFAULT.TUN is always loaded from drive A, so you will need to place your default file on the program disk. This is due to the way the KCS operates, and may change in future version of the KCS. * The Arranger Pause switch is automatically turned off each time you start the Arranger. * The scale selected in the Edit Scale window now defaults to the current scale. * The program will ask you to confirm the CLEAR selection in the Save Seq window before clearing all sequences.
