First you will need your ST manual for the pinouts of the monitor. The instructions below I acquired off the net and were given by a chap called David Bolt. He states that you need to wire a 4k7 resistor to the mono out (pin 11 not 10 as it was written) and then to the R,G,B outs. I found that when I did this the monitor would not work. When I wired them directly it would. Other sites I found do not tell you to wire in a 4k7 resistor. The second point is, do not make the same mistake I did when wiring the connector at the ST end. The pins on the VGA connector are numbered 1-15 so you can't go wrong but on the ST plug they are not so you need to look at the ST manual for the pin out. The mistake I made was wiring the ST end in a mirror image of what was required. As an example; I was wiring pin 1 as pin 4, pin 12 as pin 9 etc.. and then wondered why it didn't work!! Also don't forget to adjust your picture to get rid of those annoying borders Spud. Here are the connection details for an ST(E) to VGA monitor: ST to VGA (Colour) ------------------ ST pin number VGA pin number 7 ( Red ) ------------ 1 ( Red ) 6 ( Green ) ---------- 2 ( Green ) 10 ( Blue ) ----------- 3 ( Blue ) 9 ( H Sync ) --------- 13 ( H Sync ) 12 ( V Sync ) --------- 14 ( V Sync ) 13 ( GND ) ------------ 10 ( GND ) The following pins also need connecting together on the VGA connector: 4 ( Monitor ID Bit 2 ? ) 6 ( Red GND ) 7 ( Green GND ) 8 ( Blue GND ) 10 ( GND ) 11 ( GND ) Note. To work in this mode, the monitor must be able to operate at a line frequency of 15.5 KHz. ST to VGA (ST High) ------------------- ST pin number VGA pin number 9 ( H Sync ) --------- 13 ( H Sync ) 12 ( V Sync ) --------- 14 ( V Sync ) 13 ( GND ) ------------ 10 ( GND ) 11 ( Mono Out ) needs connecting to 4K7 resistor, and then to VGApins 1, 2 and 3. The following pins also need connecting together on the VGA connector: 4 ( Monitor ID Bit 2 ? ) 6 ( Red GND ) 7 ( Green GND ) 8 ( Blue GND ) 10 ( GND ) 11 ( GND ) The following pins also need connecting together on the ST connector: 4 ( Mono Detect ) 13 ( GND ) Regards, David E-Mail :- dbolt@my-ste.demon.co.uk /**********************************************************\ * * * Proud owner of: Atari 520STE 4Mb + Syquest EZ-135 + V.34 * * * \**********************************************************/
